Bike Trailer Buying Guide

As with buying a bike, shopping for a bike trailer comes with a lot of smaller factors to consider. There are many different options out there and you don’t want to just select the first one that you come across.

This buying guide is put together to help you make an educated decision and feel confident about the bike trailer you choose.

Type of Bike Trailer

You’re going to come across a few different types of bike trailers. The most common are the single- and two-wheel trailers. Bother are great options depending on how much weight you need it to carry.

Obviously the two-wheel trailers are going to be able to carry the most weight and are easier to pull because the weight is more evenly distributed. However, this might not be the best option if you like to ride on hilly or winding paths, as two-wheel trailers are really only ideal for wider, smoother straight paths.

If you like a little more action on your bike rides, a single-wheel trailer might be a better choice. You’ll be able to menovour more easily. You just have to be sure not to pack too much weight into these ones, or else you won’t have as much control. Whatever you do pack in it also needs be be packed carefully to ensure that the weight is balanced

Wheel

You’ll notice that some trailers come with larger or smaller wheels than others. Whether or not to go with large or small wheels will again depend on the type of terrain you’ll mostly be riding on.

While choosing a trailer with smaller sized wheels will make it much easier to store in tight spaces, larger sized wheels are going to make for a smoother ride. Since large wheels will absorb shock better than smaller ones, they’ll be a better choice if you like to take your bike down rough or rocky trails.

In addition to the size of the wheels, you should also consider the material of the tire rims. You can get either metal or plastic. This is going to affect how durable, stable and long-lasting they are. Metal rims will undoubtedly be more sturdy and lasts longer than plastic ones. Plastic rims can make for a bumpier ride and be prone to wear and tear much quicker.

Size & Weight Capacity

Before making a decision on a bike trailer, you should check the weight capacity. You’re more than likely going to be carrying more than just your child. So it’s important to calculate the weight of the child plus an estimate of any additional cargo.

At some point you might become concerned that your child will weigh too much to be carried in the bike trailer, but most likely at that point, they’re probably going to be big enough and strong enough to ride a bike of their own.

Another thing to consider is how much space you’re going to need. Some bike trailers will come with room for two children to sit in. Do you need room for two children? Or just one child and a little extra room for some cargo?

Seat Type & Comfort

Sometimes you’ll also be given the choice to add actual seats to the trailer. You’ll need to consider if that’s going to be necessary and how many you want. Once you have that decided you must consider whether you want supportive or hammock-type seats.

Supportive seating is going to be sort of like a bench-style seating. These are a bit easier to get the kids in and out of and are typically going to be more comfortable for longer rides. Supportive seats are also generally safer.

A sagging seat is much less supportive and essentially holds the child in a hammock-like fashion the floor of the cabin. This isn’t going to be as comfortable, although they are sometimes padded for increased comfort.

Attachment Type

There are two main types of attachments. First is a seat-post mount, which is a pretty easy attachment that uses a clamp that wraps around the seat-post on the bike. Sometimes these types of mounts can also be clamped onto the bike frame. The other attachment is an axle mount. This will attach directly the bike’s rear axle.

Sometimes the attachment won’t automatically come included with the bike trailer, so be sure to double check before purchasing if you need to get one separately.

Material

The more you invest better materials, the longer the bike trailer will last. If you’re going to be using it a lot or like to take out in rougher weather conditions, consider looking for water-resistant fabrics, UV protection.

As far as the frame goes, look for metal such as steel or aluminum if you want it to last. You’ll find some that are made from plastic, but know that these will not have the same strength and longevity of metal.
